Patrician III - Patrician Gold - Alderman of the Hanseatic League
 Contest 2006

The contest map has been chosen by the forum members.

The majority of the members of the  Patrizier 2 Forum has selected the map designed by Swartenhengst.  Here are some details of the map:

On this map you will find 24 cities in four groups of six.

Each group has almost everything. However, the following goods are only produced locally:

- Whale oil is only produced in Norway and Edinburgh

- Wine is only produced in the southwest.

- Efficient production of honey is limited to the southeast.

- Skins are only available in the northeast.

Furthermore, there are only limited options for effective grain productions in the north, and, in turn, timber is scarce in the south.

The same goes for wool in the west and cloth in the east.

Finally. each production chain can only be found once, i.e. effective  wool and cloth or timber and bricks in one city.

This map should be relatively easy to play in the beginning stages but requires substantial thought into the logistics for the further expansion, all the way to maximum populations. How may hubs, two, three or four - and what about the transport between the hubs?

Comments from Swartenhengst of the  Patrizier 2 Forum to the map and the home town

Here are comments to the yet  virtual thread "home town".

Naturally I am delighted that my map got the most votes in the poll about the contest2006 maps.

I can understand Mandela's concerns that the map may be to difficult to play for a newbie. As a matter of fact, the map will be rather difficult after the 3rd or 4th year.  However, for slow starters the first years, eventually the third year too, should be relatively easy since nearly all goods are produced close to the home town. However, this is only the case if a likely home town is chosen.

I would make a case for a home town in one of the two southern quarters since the northern quarters are more scattered and, therefore, do not have the advantage of being close-by as is the case in the southern quarters. Oslo may be the most central city of all the 12 Hanse cities and, therefore, a good candidate as a central hub for a single-hub system. However, the available goods are rather poor.

Both river cities should be excluded, unless someone has the desire to start a macho-contest.

In my opinion, this leaves a choice of four cities as hometown for the  Contest 2006.

My favorites would be  Stettin or Danzig (Gdansk), which are still fairly central. Gdansk has the additional  advantage of being the centre of the southeast quarter. The city has two drawbacks:  One, you will not be able to obtain financial gain with the local honey production and, second, the elections for Lord Mayor are in the spring. This means that there will be no race to become Lord Mayor as in the contest 2005 and there are only a few months between the LM and EM elections.  This means that pursuing pirates will be paramount, prior to taking on the founding of new cities.

The alternatives would be the Hanseatic cities in the southwest. They have the advantage that trade with the Mediterranean is soon possible. Furthermore, the whale-oil cities are not too distant. On the other hand, the Baltic cities are far away and the skin-producing cities are really distant.
